Kohtun sõbranna Piretiga, kes on laululõoke ja vahva hääleseadja (teda tunneme juba koorilaulu „Eesti Süda“ lindistuse aegadest, vt. seda postitust). Vaatame koos mu laule läbi, et mida järgmisena projektiks võtta, kui ta avastab ühe rõõmsameelse laulukese „Elu Folk“ aastast 2016. See aasta oli meie perele üks muutuste ja uute tuulte aasta nii vaimselt kui geoloogiliselt. Selgub, et ka tema perele. Kas laulud tulevad meid vajalikul hetkel toetama? Nagu head raamatud, mis „ilmuvad“ me ellu just siis, kui neid kõige rohkem vaja? Ja kui esimesel korral raamatu soovitust ignoreerid, kuuled sama raamatu kohta vähemalt kahelt sõbralt-tuttavalt, kuni lihtsalt pead seda lugema hakkama…  Istume ja meenutame, mis siis kaheksa aastat tagasi meie kodudes toimus. Huvitav ja uus on tihti ka raske ja ebakindel. Aga kui süda rõõmustab, siis on asi õige ja lõpp hea. Ja kui pole veel  hea, siis pole veel lõpp. Naerame, laulame koos “Elu Folki” ja rõõmustame. Siis heliseb telefon ja Kristina (siin Kristina Antšak oma tervendava südamelauluga “Love Prayer”, vt. fotot allpool) ütleb, et on ka saarele jõudnud. “Tule läbi, muidugi! Laulame just!“ Veerand tundi hiljem laulame juba kolmekesi “Elu Folki” ja rõõmustame. Midagi on aga puudu – ilma meesteta on asi kuidagi poolik. Martin (Martin Mileiko ansamblist Hilised Ärkajad), kes parasjagu samuti saarel talvitub, on nõus meeshääle enda kanda võtma. Milline kokkumäng! Panen siis meile kohalikku helistuudiosse järgmiseks nädalaks aja kinni ja astume tänavale. Siis vaatan, et keegi tuttav pargib oma ratast palmi alla minust meetrike eemal. See ju Joel oma heliseva baritoni häälega! Küsin, kas ta ka kampa tahab lüüa ja ühe rõõmsa laulu meiega stuudios sisse laulab. Muidugi tahab! No kujutage ette, kõik sujub nagu kokku lepitud! Joel vaatab sõnad üle ja kommenteerib napilt, nagu tal kombeks, „See ju selline bardi laul, … meeldib!” Lihtsalt uskumatu. Kahest on poole tunni jooksul saanud viis inimest, kes samal ajal samas kohas – aga kodumaalt ikka mõni tuhat kilomeetrit kaugemal – “puhtjuhuslikult” kokku tulevad, et teha palmisaare helistuudios üks vägev ühislaul. Imed lihtsalt juhtuvad, ettehoiatamata. Tuleb vaid tänulik olla ja rõõmustada. I have a meeting with my friend Piret, who is a true songbird and great in choir/voice arrangements (we already know her from the recordings of the choir song “Eesti Süda”, see this post). We are going through my songs together to choose one for our next project when she discovers this cheerful song “Elu Folk” from 2016. It was the year of changes and new winds for our family, both spiritually and geologically. Turns out, it was the same for her family. Do songs come to support us when we need them the most? Like good books that “appear” in our lives just at the right time? And if you ignore the book recommendation the first time, you keep surely hearing about it from friends until you just have to get it and start reading… We start recalling what happened in our homes eight years ago. Something interesting and new is often difficult and uncertain. But when the heart rejoices, it’s the right thing to do and it will end good. And if it’s not good yet, it’s not the end. And so we sit together, laughing, singing “Elu Folk” and cheering. Suddenly the phone rings and Kristina (listen here the healing “Love Prayer” from Kristina Antšak) says she has just arrived on the island. “Come by, of course! Let us sing together!”, we tell her. A quarter of an hour later, the three of us are singing “Elu Folk” and cheering. But something is missing – without men, it’s just incomplete. Martin Mileiko (from the band Hilised Ärkajad), who is currently staying here over the winter period, agrees to take over the male voice. What a coinsidence! So we make an appointment for next week at the local recording studio and go out to the street. At that moment I see someone familiar parking his bike under a palm tree, just a few meters away from me. It’s Joel with his vibrant baritone voice! I ask if he’d also want to come and sing a happy song with us in the sound studio. He says, of course he wants to! Well, imagine, everything arranges itself! Joel reads the words and comments briefly, “Well, that’s a bard song, … I like it!” Just unbelievable. Two have turned into five people just within half an hour, coming together purely by chance somewhere on a palm tree island – but a few thousand kilometers away from their homeland Estonia – to record a powerful song in a local sound studio. Miracles just happen without any warning. You just have to be grateful and happy. Or better yet – sing, be grateful and happy! So it is with this 150-year-old church song, which by the way has been translated into more than a dozen languages, including Japanese. The majority says “How Great Thou Art” is a Swedish folk tune. Some connoisseurs claim that the melody was written by Carl Gustav Boberg in 1885. But be that as it may, what counts is that the song still exists and that it is being sung. So ist es auch mit diesem 150 Jahre alten Kirchenlied, das übrigens in mehr als ein Duzend Sprachen übersetzt wurde, darunter auch ins Japanische. Die Mehrheit sagt, “Wie Gross bist Du” sei ein schwedisches Volkslied. Einige Kenner behaupten, dass die Melodie 1885 von Carl Gustav Boberg geschrieben wurde. Aber wie dem auch sei, entscheidend ist, dass das Lied noch existiert und gesungen wird. Wenn man an Schweden denkt, kommen zu erst das erfolgreiche Möbelhaus und die sympathische Königsfamilie in den Sinn, aber auch Bands wie ABBA, Roxette, Ace of Base, The Cardigans, Europe… Den Schweden liegt es einfach im Blut, weltberühmte Hits zu schreiben! Vernissage / Exposición fotográfica “Los Espíritus del Bosque de Garajonay” The Grand Opening of the Photo-Vernissage “The Spirits of the Garajonay Rainforest” of Romana Christina Pelagatti was held on 11th of April 2024 at 20:00 in San Sebastian de La Gomera, the capital of the island. Andi Louis (Keyboard), Tiina Tomson (Voice, Joik, Jew’s Harp), Ignacio Fauri (Percussion) und Karolina Trybala (Voice, Shruti Box) were responsible for the musical part of the show that let the forest fairies dance their magical dance in the misty exhibition hall of the City Town Hall. Romana’s unique Photo Collection is a proof of her vivid connection with trees, that makes her see the invisible, introducing to the audience the enticing animated characteristics of the trees in the Garajonay Rainforest. The exhibition is open to public from 11th of April till 31st of May 2024 from 08:00 till 15:00 in the City Town Hall of San Sebastian. Don’t miss out this chance to be charmed by nature itself! Aitäh, Aidi, et jagad meiega sinu imearmsat, inspireerivat ja originaalset luulesoont! See puudutas kohe nii hinge, et tahtsin seda ikka ja jälle lugeda, lausa pähe õppida. Veel parem – laulda. Paar nädalat hiljem see õnnestuski ja sain luuletusele viisi valmis. Minu tütar palus ikka, et ma talle õhtul voodis “Emme laulu” laulan ja sellest sai meie igaõhtune magamamineku rituaal. Mild winter temperatures though in Estonian terms – just minus 12 degrees! I was reading the works of Estonian poets and I found a wonderful poem written by Aidi Vallik, an estonian children’s author and poet. Thank you, Aidi, for sharing your lovely, inspiring and original poetry! It immediately touched my soul; so much that I wanted to read it again and again, even memorize it. Even better – sing it. So a few weeks later I managed to write a melody & chords to the poem. My daughter kept asking me to sing “Mommy’s song” to her in bed at night, so it became our good-night ritual. Soon I also received a written consent from the poet to perform her work. For eight years, this piece of music+poetry has been waiting for its time in my drawer. In the meantime, I have become a mother for the second time and feel the authenticity of this poem even more. We recorded the song just recently with Andi Louis on keys in Zwirnerei Sound Studio in Switzerland. Foto: © Andrea Künzig 2024: Tiina pojaga “Laps ja Ema” (Kind und Mutter) Im Februar 2016, mitten im „arktisch kalten“ Schweizer Winter (genau so wurde in den Lokalnachrichten berichtet; milde Wintertemperaturen jedoch für estnische Verhältnisse – nur minus 12 Grad!) fand ich beim Lesen der Werke estnischer Dichter eine wunderbare Entdeckung: dieses Gedicht geschrieben von Aidi Vallik. Danke, Aidi, für deine wunderschönen, inspirierenden und originellen Gedichte! Es berührte meine Seele so sehr, dass ich es immer wieder lesen und sogar auswendig lernen wollte. Es zu singen wäre noch besser, dachte ich. Ein paar Wochen später ist es gelungen und ich hatte eine Melodie zum Gedicht. Meine Tochter bat mich immer wieder, ihr nachts im Bett „Mamas Lied“ vorzusingen, also wurde aus dem unser Gute-Nacht-Ritual. Bald erhielt ich auch die schriftliche Einwilligung des Dichters, ihr Werk aufzuführen. Acht Jahre lang wartete das Lied in einer Schublade auf seine Zeit. Mittlerweile bin ich zum zweiten Mal Mutter geworden und mit umso tieferen Gefühlen konnte ich es in diesem Winter (2023) im Zwirnerei Tonstudio einsingen. Jetzt ist es endlich ganz fertig. Seda postitust pole mul kerge teha ja olen seda kaks kuud edasi lükanud. Nüüd siis. Kaks nädalat enne minu isa surma (märkus: augustis 2023) kirjutasin ma ühe tõsise laulu metsa minemisest, kui tundeid on liiga palju, ja maa põue minemisest, kui hing jälle koju hakkab tahtma. See laul tuli ise minu juurde, kusagil keset Andaluusia suvekuuma, kui sõitsime autoga Kanaaridelt Šveitsi poole. Kümme minutit hiljem oli laul paberil ja mina nõutu ja hämmingus. Miks selline laul praegu minu juurde tuli; ma küll ei tunne, et ma elust väsinud oleks, mõtlesin ikka ja jälle. Kaks nädalat hiljem lahkus minu isa (Ado Tomson’i akordionimängu lühivideo leiad minu Youtube’i kanalil) ja laulsingi tema matustel seda laulu.   Kui kummaline on elu. Ja kuidas me kõik siin ilmas omavahel seotud oleme. Enamasti salamahti, ja vahel harva muutub see side nähtavaks. Vahel tuleb teispoolsus siiapoole üle ja reedab oma olemasolu näiteks läbi ühe laulu. Seda võib vaadelda kui juhust, aga seda võib näha ka kui tõestust, et meie hinged omavahel pidevalt suhtlevad ja teavad tähtsamaid sündmusi vahel isegi ette. It is not easy to write this blog and I have been procrastinating with it for two months. So here it comes. It was two weeks before my dad died (note: in august 2023) when I wrote this serious song about going into the woods when I feel overwhelmed by feelings, handing over to trees whatever I seem to have too much of, be it tiredness, be it joy or sadness; and laying to rest in the lap of the Earth when the soul desires to go back home. It all came to me somewhere in the middle of Andalusia, south of Spain, as we were driving from the Canary Islands towards Switzerland. Just ten minutes later I had the whole song on paper and I myself was stunned and clueless. “Why such a song, why now? I don’t feel like dying yet!”, I asked myself over and over again. Two weeks later my father passed away (there’s a short video of Ado Tomson playing accordion on my Youtube channel). Little did I know that I would sing that song at his funeral three weeks later. But so it came to be, alas.    How strange life is and how connected we all are in this world. Mostly it’s an unnoticeable secret, but sometimes – at very special times – this connection becomes visible through a flow of information. For instance, when “the other side” reveals its existence through a song or a poem. Surely, you can see it as a coincidence. But-and, you can also see it as a proof that our souls are constantly communicating. What is connection other than love? And what is love other than a connection? Es ist nicht einfach, dieses Blog zu schreiben und ich habe es für zwei Monate immer wieder verschoben. Jetzt aber. Zwei Wochen bevor mein Vater starb (Anmerkung: im August 2023) schrieb ich ein seriöses, tiefsinniges Lied über die Bäume, dass man in den Wald geht, wenn man gerade zu viele Gefühle in sich trägt, weil man dem Wald alles abgeben kann; und schliesslich über den ewigen Schlaf, Ruhen in der Schoss der Erde wenn die Seele wieder zurück ins Licht will. Dieses Lied kam wie selbst zu mir, irgendwo mitten in Andalusien, Süd-Spanien, als wir mit dem Auto von den Kanarischen Inseln Richtung Schweiz unterwegs waren. 10 Minuten später war alles auf dem Papier niedergeschrieben und ich war total verwundert und ratlos. “Warum kam genau so ein Lied gerade jetzt zu mir? Kahju, aga oleme õnnelikud, et see suur projekt nii hästi õnnestus ja nii soojalt publiku ja pressi poolt vastu võeti. Kuu aja jooksul käis meid kuulamas-vaatamas ca 10 000 inimest. Kõik etenduses osalejad, nii laval kui lava taga – üle saja näitleja, 20 hobust ja ratsanikku, valguse- ja helimehed, meie kolm live-muusikutena (Tiina: laul & flööt; vt. fotot allpool), make-up artists, kostümeerijad, õmblejad, puusepad-ehitajad, kes iga õhtu kohal olid, samuti režii ja korraldajad – kõik me olime septembrikuu viimasel pühapäeval õndsas meeleolus ja tänulikud, et saime osaleda milleski nii vahvas ja kordumatus. Allpool fotomuljeid “Peata ratsaniku” etendusest. This year’s open-air theater in St. Gallen, Switzerland is finished. It’s a pity, but we are happy that this big project succeeded so well and was so warmly received by the audience and by the press. Within a month, about 10,000 people came to listen and see the play. All the participants in the show, both on stage as well as behind it – over 100 actors, 20 horses and riders, stage light and sound team, the three of us as live musicians (Tiina: voice & flute; see photo below), make-up artists, costume designers, seamstresses, carpenters-builders who all were present every night, as well as the director and organisers – all of us were in a blissful mood on the last Sunday of September and grateful that we could participate in something so great and unique. Schade, aber wir freuen uns, dass dieses große Projekt so gut gelungen ist und beim Publikum und der Presse so großen Anklang gefunden hat. Innerhalb eines Monats kamen insgesamt ca 10.000 Menschen um das Theater zu sehen. Alle Teilnehmer der Show, sowohl auf der Bühne als auch dahinter – über 100 Schauspieler, 20 Pferde und Reiter, Bühnenlicht- und Tonteam, wir drei als Live-Musiker (Tiina: Gesang & Flöte; siehe Foto unten), Visagisten, Kostüm Designer, Näherinnen, Tischler, die alle jeden Abend anwesend waren, sowie die Regisseurin und die Organisatoren – wir alle waren am letzten Sonntag im September in glückseliger Stimmung und dankbar, dass wir an etwas so Großartigem und Einzigartigem teilnehmen durften. Lullaby “Lapselapsele” The lullaby “Lapselapsele” (For the Grandchild) is inspired by the wild nature of Estonia and my grandmother’s lullabies and chants. She often sang to me in her old Estonian dialect when I stayed over night at my grandparents’ farm in the forests southwest of Estonia. Last winter, the idea of a collaboration with the flamenco guitarist Martin Złotnicki arose, to fuse together calm Nordic folk music and rhythmic Spanish guitar. This symbiosis gave birth to a series of unique songs. Schlaflied “Lapselapsele” Das Schlaflied „Lapselapsele“ (Für das Enkelkind) ist inspiriert von der wilden Natur Estlands und dem alt-estnischen Gesang und Singsang meiner Großmutter. Als ich noch klein war, bin ich oft auf dem Bauernhof meiner Großeltern gewesen, mitten in den Wäldern und Moorlandschaften südwestlich von Estland, zwischen dem Meer und dem Fluss. Letzten Winter entstand die Idee einer Zusammenarbeit mit dem Flamenco-Gitarristen Martin Złotnicki, um ruhigen nordischen Folk und rhythmisches spanisches Gitarrenspiel zu vereinen. Aus dieser Symbiose entstand eine Reihe einzigartiger Lieder.
